Responsibilities

As the primary financial management agency of Edo State, the Office of the Accountant General carries out a range of crucial responsibilities to ensure the effective stewardship of public funds and promote fiscal integrity. Our responsibilities are delineated into the following sections:

We are responsible for the meticulous preparation and execution of the state’s budget, working closely with government departments and agencies to allocate resources in alignment with strategic priorities and development objectives.

The Office of the Accountant General oversees the collection and management of government revenues, including taxes, levies, and fees, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations and maximizing revenue generation for the state.

We manage the state’s treasury operations, including cash flow forecasting, cash management, and investment management, to optimize liquidity, minimize borrowing costs, and safeguard public funds.

Our agency prepares comprehensive financial reports in accordance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements, providing stakeholders with transparent and accurate information on the state’s financial position and performance. We also conduct regular internal audits to ensure compliance with policies and procedures and identify areas for improvement.

We oversee the processing of payroll and pension payments for government employees and retirees, ensuring timely and accurate disbursement of salaries, wages, and pension benefits in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

The Office of the Accountant General provides financial advisory services to government agencies, offering expertise and guidance on financial planning, budgeting, and resource management to support effective decision-making and performance.

We monitor compliance with financial regulations and guidelines, enforcing accountability and transparency in the management of public funds and taking appropriate action to address instances of non-compliance or financial misconduct.

Our agency plays a key role in the development and implementation of financial policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with government priorities and objectives and promoting efficiency, transparency, and accountability in financial management practices.

We engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including government officials, legislators, civil society organizations, and the public, to solicit feedback, promote transparency, and foster collaboration in the management of public finances.
